Story One: A Deliberate Journey
From San Francisco (via Costa Rica) to the wine country of Northern California … a bold moves story about simplifying and aligning a couple’s individual values and beliefs into a compelling, on-purpose future.
We began our work with Allan with the objective to get us as a conscious husband and wife team on a path where we were able to see much more clearly the calling that God was beckoning us to, and the obstacles that were in the way. Around the same time, we began reading about simplicity (Simple Living Guide by Janet Luhrs; Freedom of Simplicity by Richard Foster; Challenge of a Disciplined Life by Richard Foster) and embarked on a journey towards simplicity ourselves.
We became very fond of Thoreau’s quote, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I wanted to live deep and suck all the marrow of life . . .” and our credo became Proverbs 16:9 “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”
We longed to strike out down a path towards the people we had ‘found’ in ourselves in our session with Allan, and we knew that to do it we needed to simplify. To make, in the words of Janet Luhrs, deliberate choices towards “living deeply—intimately, closely tied to the people, places and things in our lives.” And we needed to make a leap of faith and break from the ruts we had dug for ourselves throughout the years.
We decided that come the New Year, Christopher would leave his corporate job; we would put everything we owned in storage, depart our San Francisco apartment, and drive our Ford Explorer down to Costa Rica to live for three months in the jungle. At the time, we were not sure of the goal; we just knew we had things to learn along the way. And that we did. However, we also went through an instant transformation from “adventurers” during our travels to “homeless” upon coming back to America when crossing the border into San Diego. After an extraordinary journey, both physically and spiritually, we settled in a sleepy town in Northern California to regain focus. We had made the break; the question was “what now?”
The specifics of that answer continue to morph in our careers and our personal lives. But by getting in touch with what was essential to us, what we're most passionate about, we have a deeper sense of fulfillment in our lives.
And, the very best bold move of them all has been to adopt our daughter, Noemi de Leon Huber. Born November 6, 2006 in Guatemala, Lia and I brought her home on June 21, 2007. She is the source of limitless joy and provides the best present moment training we’ve ever encountered. It is clear that she chose us and patiently waited till now.
As we pursue our dreams in alignment with our values, our story continues today with an on-purpose life that is full. Allan continues to help us not only achieve our professional goals, but draws us closer to the holistic picture of the people we want to be and the way we want to live, constantly challenging us to make sure that each unique facet of ourselves that God has created for a purpose be fed, nurtured and shared.
As a result of we are blessed to be on this bold journey.
Christopher and Lia
